A small batch of broth is useful when you want a spoonable topper you can portion ahead. This version uses a slow cooker, followed by careful straining and chilling. The finished liquid belongs over your dog’s regular food; the cooked bones do not belong in the serving bowl.
Before you start
Use a fine sieve lined with clean cheesecloth, and check the strained liquid again before storing it. A wide, shallow container cools more quickly than a deep, full stockpot.

Slow-Cooked Beef Broth for Dog Food Toppers recipe
About 24 hours cooking, plus chilling
Batch yield: 45 Servings. Actual size and count may vary; this is not a daily serving recommendation.
Ingredients
- 5 Beef marrow bones (bones for simmering only; discard after cooking)
- 2 large carrots (whole, unpeeled)
- 2 sticks celery
- 1/4 cup apple cider vinegar
- 1/2 teaspoon turmeric (with a pinch of black pepper)
- 4 cups water (use enough to cover ingredients)
Method
- Put the bones, vegetables, vinegar and spices into a slow cooker. Add enough water to cover, staying below its maximum fill line.
- Cook on low for 24 hours. Lift out the solids and strain the liquid thoroughly; discard every bone and fragment.
- Divide into shallow containers and refrigerate promptly. Once chilled, lift away the firm fat layer. Serve a small amount of the defatted liquid.

How should I serve it?
Offer a small, manageable portion under supervision. Treats and toppers supplement regular food; they do not replace a complete diet. Ask your veterinarian before introducing this recipe if your dog has food allergies, a medical condition or a prescribed diet.
Keep extras within your dog’s daily treat allowance.
Storage and preparation notes
Refrigerate promptly in a covered container at 40°F / 4°C or below. Use within three days, or freeze portions sooner. This is a conservative storage plan, not a tested shelf-life claim.
See USDA storage guidance and minimum cooking temperatures. This recipe has not been kitchen-tested by My Dog Recipe; check doneness rather than relying only on the timer.
Why did the broth turn jelly-like?
Chilled broth can set softly. Stir a little into food, or gently warm a separate portion and let it cool before serving. Do not add extra ingredients simply to change its appearance.
